Job Title: Director of Music

Job Purpose:

Wrightsville United Methodist Church is a thriving congregation of 2700 members. We are

The Director of Music provides, supports, fosters, and coordinates the music within the worship services by serving as principal organist/pianist/accompanist and director of choirs. This individual provides leadership and opportunities for growth in existing choral and handbell choirs and encourages, invites, and rehearses with individuals in solo opportunities. The person in this position will be extending the ministry of Wrightsville UMC to our employees, our members, and the surrounding community.

Job Duties:

  • Serve as principal organist/pianist/accompanist for all worship services
  • Foster and support the musical gifts of others to share these gifts within worship
  • Provide leadership and opportunities for growth in existing choral and handbell choirs
  • Encourage and invite individuals and groups to share musical gifts within worship settings
  • In cooperation with the pastor and other staff , will support the creation of Sunday worship experiences that are thematically unified
  • Will help develop and establish a vision for the role of music in the life of the church and its members of all ages
  • Ensure that music is provided accordingly for all major Christian Holy Days including but not limited to Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday
  • Maintain music library and ensure that music licenses are up-to-date, and all requirements of licenses are met
  • Ensure maintenance and setup of piano, organ, and all other instruments
  • Participate in regular staff and worship planning meetings with pastors and other staff
  • Supervise age-level and specialty choir directors as well as musicians and AV staff

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An undergraduate degree in music preferred
  • Experience as a Director of Music in a church setting
  • Knowledge of music theory and practice, conducting, choral vocal methods, church music of various genres
  • Basic understanding of the liturgy, ritual, and ministry of the United Methodist Church or willingness to learn
  • Working knowledge and selection of appropriate music corresponding to the Christian liturgical calendar
  • Ability to work with team in creative and collaborative ways
  • Good interpersonal skills to connect with diverse individuals and families
  • Ability to work independently and with diverse teams, prioritize deadlines, receive feedback and make adjustments as needed

Additional Skills and Desired Qualifications:

  • United Methodist Church and/or Ecumenical Mainline Christian background
  • Knowledge of basic handbell techniques or willingness to learn
  • Knowledge of organ or willingness to learn
  • Affiliation with church and/or musical associations and conferences
