When did you join the staff and what is your position?
I joined the staff July 1, 2021 to serve as the Part-time Associate Pastor/Minister of Visitation.
Where did you go to school?
B.A. Degree (Religion with a minor in Biblical Languages) from Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida.Master of Divinity Degree earned at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, in Wake Forest, NC.Coursework toward the Doctor of Ministry Degree at Ashland Theological Seminary in Ashland, OH.
Do you have family?
My wife, Binky, is a retired Accountant. Her last 14 years of work were with a custom homebuilder in Wake Forest. We have three children and six grandchildren. Our daughter Vickie Hoelzle (Scott) works for BB&T and lives in Clayton, NC. They have two children, Olivia and Finn. Our daughter Lindsey Reiner (Todd) is an Instructional Coach at Eaton Elementary and lives in Wilmington. They have two daughters, Riley and Aubrey. Our son Drew (Katie) Pearce does computer stuff for Accenture, an international consulting and management resource firm, and lives near Atlanta, GA. They have two daughters, Evie and Lydia.
When did you decide to be a pastor?
When I was 18 years old in the summer of 1969 after I graduated high school, I first felt called to vocational ministry. In December of 1969 I was Licensed to Preach and in May 1974 I was ordained. In 2002 I received my first Methodist appointment. In 2006 I transferred my credentials to become a full Elder in the United Methodist Church. Over the past 53 years I have served churches as Youth Minister, Pastor, and Associate Pastor. I also worked on the staff of Prison Fellowship Ministries in the 1980’s and on the international staff of Habitat for Humanity in the late 1990’s.
What is your favorite part of being a pastor at WUMC?
I am excited to work with such a dedicated and amazing church staff. They help make it a joy to come to work! And on top of that, the great church folks I am meeting every week. I love visiting with senior citizens and also hanging out with our amazing youth and children. During worship I love presenting the children’s sermon. You never know what those kids will say!
